Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What it is

  • Color Mending is a neuroscience-based emotional regulation methodology created by Chelsea K-K.

It uses intuitive coloring and proprietary interpretation charts to help people decode their emotions through body-first, non-verbal processing.

No talking. No revisiting your past. No artistic skills required.

  • Chelsea K-K, the creator of Color Mending, calls herself the “Inner World Decoder” because she created the tool that helps people translate physical body sensations into emotional understanding.

The tool is called Color Mending. It uses coloring to help you turn how you feel on the inside into a picture that can help your brain find the words to describe your experience to others.

  • Color Mending is a two-step process.

The first step is intuitive coloring. This step begins with identify what you want to color about. Most people choose a feeling they can’t name, a pattern they keep noticing themselves in, or a question that has been on their mind. As they think about what they selected to color about, they do a body scan, identifying the spot in their body that is making the most noise (or where they feel the strongest sensation). Once the spot has been identified, they color it out using any color and shape they want.

The second step of Color Mending is to use the proprietary Color and Shapes Charts to gather clues from their coloring, specifically what emotion they’re feeling and why they’re feeling the emotions. The Charts are guides to help the person make connections, shift their perspective, and find the words to describe their inner world to others.

The process is self-directed, non-verbal, and doesn’t require any artistic ability.

The science behind It

  • Color Mending is grounded in Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett's Theory of Constructed Emotions, which holds that emotions are predictions built by the brain from body signals and past experience, not hardwired reactions.

Chelsea K-K also drew on the latest interoception research, which identifies the ability to notice internal body sensations as foundational to emotional awareness.

You can read about this in more depth in this blog post: Your emotions aren’t random, they’re predictions.

  • Interoception is the brain's process of sensing and interpreting signals from inside the body. Everything from heartbeat, tension, temperature, gut feelings, etc.

It is foundational to emotional awareness because emotions are constructed from these body signals.

Color Mending is an educational tool built specifically on interoception-based processing.

You can read about interoception in more depth in this blog post: What is interoception? The body sense that shapes every emotion.

  • A body-first approach starts with physical sensations rather than thoughts or memories as the entry point for understanding emotions.

Color Mending uses this approach, allowing people to access emotional information through the body before, or instead of, trying to articulate it verbally.

Who it’s for

  • Color Mending is for adults who struggle to identify, name, or articulate their emotions.

It works especially well for people who…

    • feel emotionally numb or disconnected

    • have tried talk therapy and felt stuck

    • are neurodivergent and experience emotions intensely or have difficulty identifying what they’re feeling

    • are rebuilding self-trust after being part of high-control religious environments

  • Yes! Color Mending offers a Professional Certification Course for licensed therapists, counselors, and coaches who want to integrate interoception-based, non-verbal emotional regulation tools into their practice.

Color Mending is specifically designed to complement — not replace — clinical work.

You can read how other professionals are using Color Mending here.

  • Color Mending is well-suited for people who have struggled with traditional talk-based approaches.

Because Color Mending bypasses language as the entry point to emotional processing, it can reach people who feel stuck, shut down, or unable to access their emotions through conversation alone.

In fact, almost all of the clients Chelsea works with in 1:1 settings take the insights from their coloring sessions to a licensed professional to process or work through.

How it differs from therapy

  • No. Color Mending is an educational tool grounded in neuroscience.

It is not therapy, does not constitute as clinical treatment, or diagnose and label mental health conditions.

Color Mending is designed to build emotional literacy and self-awareness, so the individual using the tool can become a better advocate for themselves - both in terms of finding licensed professionals to work with, and to make their sessions with licensed mental health professionals more impactful.

  • Traditional talk therapy uses language and narrative as the primary tools for emotional processing.

Color Mending takes a bottom-up, body-first approach, using color and physical sensation as the entry point. This makes it accessible to people who struggle to verbalize their inner experience to others.

  • Yes! In fact, Chelsea K-K recommends taking your insights from your Color Mending sessions to process and work through.

Also, many licensed therapists use Color Mending as a complementary tool with their clients.

Please note: Color Mending is not a replacement for clinical care but can extend emotional regulation work between sessions or provide a non-verbal option for clients who are not yet ready for verbal processing.
