Spend less time emotionally regulating clients.
Make more progress in every session.
Color Mending Therapy teaches your clients to identify, understand, and move through emotions… before they walk into your office.
The problem
The problem
The #1 pain point we hear from therapists and coaches:
Most of your session time is spent emotionally regulating clients.
You’re helping the client get out of their head and into their body. You’re walking them through feeling their feelings. You’re guiding them to find language for their inner experience.
All so (1) you have the information you need to make the session effective, and (2) so the client is open to learning and growing.
It’s essential work, but…
What if your clients could emotionally regulate before your sessions?
What is Color Mending Therapy?
Color Mending Therapy is an interoception tool that teaches the skill of emotional regulation in a sustainable and playful way.
This tool teaches affective interoception: the ability to sense, interpret, and understand your unique internal emotional signals.
Using intuitive coloring paired with proprietary interpretation charts for the colors and shapes they used in their coloring, clients learn to:
Label the emotion they're experiencing
Understand where it came from and why it's there
Move through it productively
It's not art therapy or a relaxation technique.
It's a sustainable and accessible skill-building tool that gives clients the language and awareness to show up ready for deeper work.
The benefits
The benefits
For you
😌 Clients arrive emotionally regulated. They’ve sat with their feelings, understand the what and why behind the feeling, and have language to tell you about it.
📈 Faster progress. They’re making sense of their inner world on their own, making your sessions less about coping and more about transforming.
🤝 Less burnout. Clients learn to partner with you, not depend on you.
💪 More sustainable outcomes. Clients with self-regulation skills integrate insights and sustain progress more easily.
💵 Additional revenue. Earn money for each client referral through Color Mending’s affiliate program.
For Your Clients
🖍️ Meets clients where they’re at. It uses materials clients likely already have. And, clients will only color what they’re ready to look at without having them revisit trauma or use words.
🔎 Teaches clients to look inward first. Instead of immediately reaching for co-regulation, clients learn to check in with themselves and build trust with their internal body signals.
💪 Builds emotional literacy. Through repetition, clients move from “I don’t know” to “I’m feeling grief about my childhood. It’s showing up as anger towards my partner.”
📢 Shifts clients from victim to advocate. Clients shift from “Why is this happening to me?” to “What is this emotion trying to get me to see?”

Evidence-based
Evidence-based
Grounded in neuroscience. Built for real-world application.
Color Mending is built on Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett's Theory of Constructed Emotions and interoception research. The main idea of the theory:
Emotions aren't hardwired reactions.
They're predictions your brain makes based on internal signals and past experiences.
Color Mending teaches clients to become aware of these signals and reinterpret them, giving them agency over their emotional experience.
While the research is complex, Color Mending is simple. Clients don’t need to understand the neuroscience to benefit from it.
Since 2019, Chelsea has worked with over 300 people of all genders, ages, and neurotypes to develop this tool.
Color Mending works great for clients who…
✅ Struggle to name what they're feeling ("I just feel bad")
✅ Need concrete tools, not just talk
✅ Get stuck in their head and can't access their body
✅ Process better through visual or hands-on methods
✅ Are emotionally flooded and need to ground before going deeper
✅ Shut down when asked to journal or free-write

FAQs
-
The creator of Color Mending Therapy is Chelsea Kasen-Kells. She developed this methodology after growing up in an environment where emotions were suppressed and compliance was valued over authenticity.
After becoming certified in IPT (Integrated Processing Technique) and noticing her clients were depending on her to emotionally regulate, she developed Color Mending to help build affective interoception.
-
Art therapy focuses on creative expression; the art itself is the therapy.
Color Mending uses coloring as a tool to access interoceptive signals, then teaches clients to interpret those signals using structured charts. The coloring isn't the therapy; the awareness and interpretation are.
-
Somatic therapy focuses on body-based awareness and releasing stored trauma through physical sensations and movement.
Color Mending focuses on teaching clients to identify and interpret their internal emotional signals (interoception) so they can understand and articulate their inner world.
Somatic therapists use Color Mending as a complementary tool.
-
Color Mending is designed to complement your existing practice, not replace it. Many therapists use it as a between-session tool or as a way to help clients prepare for deeper modalities.
-
We've worked with clients who initially said they "don't like coloring" or "aren't creative." Once they understand it's not about making something pretty, it's about accessing their internal signals, most engage with it.
The process itself is intuitive and requires no artistic ability.
-
Color Mending has been used successfully with clients from age 8 to 80+.
There are two versions of the interpretation charts:
For adults
For kids & teens
Both the Color and Common Shapes Charts can be used across genders and neurotypes.
